Collaborative Genes. Collaborative Design. - ecoDECO
The team at EcocentricGuide is pleased to introduce you to a design team that pulls inspiration not only from the materials that they come across, but from a deep rooted connection they have with each other - they are twins.
Jason and Lars Dressler own and operate their business – simply named – Brothers Dressler. At Brothers Dressler, Jason and Lars focus on crafting furniture that “explores materials, process and purpose.” It’s a new twist on design – they begin the creative process from the materials that are available to them versus the traditional design first, then source materials. This non-traditional approach has not only carved a niche for their continued success, but their designs are organic, unique, and full of panache.
The Brothers Dressler mantra – “it's time to rethink our definitions of waste and value - it doesn’t mean there isn’t still space for objects that stimulate our minds and comfort our bodies. The repurposing of salvaged material into original furniture is a sensible response to problems caused by excessive consumption. As shapers of the landscape that surrounds us and the interiors we inhabit our goal is to create an atmosphere of beauty, rebirth and renewal by using material responsibly and minimizing waste.” It’s their vision of the future and their hope for the role of designers, builders and artists within it.
The brothers build furniture and other objects with a respect for material, process and craftsmanship. By focusing on creating at a craft level, they are able to design and produce all of their custom furniture and batch production work out of their woodshop in Toronto, Canada. “We are always looking for opportunities to repurpose and upcycle salvaged objects, materials and waste streams and we make an effort to use renewable resources and suppliers who share our commitment to responsible forestry practices.
The nature of their work is defined by the specific elements that go into each piece; they embrace the constraints inherent in each project and use them to focus the possibilities and direct their continual search for responsible materials. Wasting material is taboo to them and they believe that with a little creative thinking much of the potential waste can be repurposed into useful and beautiful objects.
In true eco-fashion, they create their numbered series, limited editions, one-of-a-kind objects and made-to-order commission work by striving to maintain a small footprint in the way they consume and the purpose in which they build. “All of our pieces are composed of long-lasting individual components so that they can easily be disassembled into their component parts and either re-used or recycled at the end of their useful lifecycles.”
EcoLove: the onedge rocker chair rocks
Their onedge series explores design using plywood on its edge to create form, structure and comfort. The onedge rocker allows for relaxation and swaying movement for times of repose. The cantilevered design offers slight flex and movement for relaxing with a book, surfing ecocentricguide.ca on your laptop, or rocking your new baby to sleep. Also, in their effort to minimize the waste generated in the creation of the onedge series, excess material is upcycled into other products – check out “curiosities” page on their website – www.brothersdressler.com.
