What a Load of Sh*t! - ecoCULTURE
Toronto's PoopooPaper people aren't making a typical activist's stink, but what they are doing is changing the face of the 3 R’s… “pRo”-duce, Reuse, and Recyle is their MO... crafting beautiful, high-quality paper and stationery products by repurposing what others readily dispose of: Shit. Elephant dung to be precise. The praiseworthy thing here is that they're subsequently conserving the very elephants they, umm, “recycle” from.
Their sustainable cycle works like this: elephants need a clean environment and a good diet. When these needs are met an elephant produces a lot of dung, which is then collected and recycled to create sustainable 'poo-products' (100% recyclable and odorless!). A single elephant turd can make about 25 large sheets of paper...and elephants can product 225lbs of poo per day. That’s a crap load of paper!
PoopooPaper supports and works with various conservation parks to gather the dung then pre-rinse it, leaving only the fibrous materials from the grasses, bamboo and the fruits they've eaten. They then process it into extraordinary (to say the very least) paper. The spirit and passion behind their products is rooted in the belief that their products represent a healthy and sustainable balance between ecological responsibility and commercial pursuit. As part of this brilliant initiative they are even providing group fundraising methods; including a free personalized website and product store where organizations can participate in unique fundraising drives using their environmentally friendly products. (re-poo-posing! )
