Going Greenwood - ecoDECO
Michael Greenwood is passionate about wood. And the aptly named craftsman’s roots go deep.
From the family workshop to the forests of southern Ontario, for Michael its an interest that dates back to the days the days of Lego and Mechano. Thus this passion took hold after university when he funded his thirst for travel through home renovations- after studying guitar-making at OCAD his appreciation for precision woodwork exploded. His attention to detail borders on obsession - furniture design and woodworking provided the perfect opportunity to meld building and fine craftsmanship.
Greenwood Studio is a boutique where all work is custom designed and extends from chic-sustainable home furnishings to custom interior pieces. They've built adventure playgrounds in the trees for kids and he's fast developing a reputation for his supercool eco-chic treehouses for adults. Seriously sweet ! Check it out. A few of us here at EcocentricGuide are seriously considering commissioning one to live in full-time.
All materials Michael produces are from sustainable sources- being either salvaged or reclaimed. Each each piece of wood is sourced by hand with discerning attention to its ultimate function, form and aesthetic, and significant time and effort is invested seeking out unique, interesting and distinct grain patterns. Source locations are always small and local operations that have minimal impact on their surroundings. We love that!
Sustainability is at the heart of all that Greenwood Studio is about. “It’s not just green-washing,” he noted to styleNorth. His commitment is equal parts ethical priority and family legacy. “I want to have something to say for myself when they’re 20 and they ask me, ‘So, Dad, what did you do to make the planet a better place when we were growing up?”
Greenwood Studio, is located in Dupont Woodworking - a co-op woodshop in the Spadina/Dupont area of Toronto.
